So last year, in the March-April time frame, I assembled my kit for a great Miata project, something I’ve wanted to do for a long time:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I got a Megasquirt-PNP DIY, and the Jenvy IRTB kit for Miata 1.6 including RX-8 injectors.

By the end of April I had soldered together the DIY Megasquirt, and then unexpectedly had to put the project on hold in order to move my family to a new house. All my parts went in boxes. I moved across town, and since then there has always been something that took precedence over getting back to the project.

It has now been 9 months, and as each weekend comes and goes, I stare at those few boxes on the shelf in my garage, going unused.

What can I do to motivate myself to get back into it? Part of my problem now is that I’ve lost that rush, that push to get it done, and instead I’m constantly thinking: What if I put the Megasquirt in and it just doesn’t start? What if I get the ECU working with the stock airbox but when I put the IRTBs in the whole thing goes to pot? What if I need to do metal fab work to get the throttle cable to the IRTBs and it’s way beyond my ability?

As a practical matter, not just motivational platitudes, how do I take that next step?

Think about the positives instead of the negatives.

ITBs are going to sound awesome and be pretty darn snappy.

Sure, there’s a possiblity that something will go wrong (in fact, I bet several things won’t work quite right the first time), but why is that a cause for worry? Take your time, work through each issue, and you’ll come through the other side with an awesome build and complete knowledge of how it all works.

I know these feels. I haven’t touched my 540i in a while because I’ve become paranoid that the metal flakes from the timing guides may have ruined bearings. But I need somewhere to tear down my old e30 so I’ve got to get it running or at least figure out if it’s now scrap.

Most projects do not come from a really rational place. Unless we are fixing something that’s broken while upgrading the car we are temporarily sidelining a perfectly useable vehicle. The more you think about it the harder it is to go through with it from complacency of the status quo. You just need to dive into it cold and put yourself in the position where you are forced to continue.

Yeah, right now at least it runs, you know? Plus, every other thing that’s bad about it now seems overwhelming: Oh, dashboard is cracked and it needs new suspension bushings all round, maybe it’s not worth it to fix it up... (nonsense, I know).

I’m just going to have to bite the bullet.

Soon.

I hope.

Find an event that you want to take the car to in five or six months and sign up for it. Pay money if you can. Now you you have a goal and a a deadline.

Id imagine the next step is to intall the megasquirt and finish the wiring if it’s not done. At the same time pull the intake off and mock it up to see what kind of work will be necessary to get the throttle actuation to work. If the cars a daily that might be a problem, and the next step would be a beater car.
